Put out your butts! Tobacco use is the largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S.

MHS wants you to participate in the Great American Smokeout!

It’s held on the third Thursday of November. This has been going on since 1977. It is a single-day campaign encouraging smokers to quit for at least 24 hours. This year’s event takes place on Nov. 20.

Here are some facts about tobacco use:

  • 25.6% of adults in Indiana smoke
  • Indiana ranks high among all states in adult smoking prevalence and is higher than the U.S. rate of 21.2%
  • In Indiana each year, about 1,200 adult nonsmokers die from exposure to secondhand smoke
  • In children, secondhand smoke can cause ear infections, more severe asthma, respiratory infections, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)

But the health benefits of quitting start as soon as you stop smoking. By quitting, you are taking a step toward a healthier life.

If you want to quit, are thinking about quitting, or know someone else who is, call the Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
